What is Video Projection Mapping ?
Video projection mapping is an exciting new projection technique that can transform almost any surface into a dynamic video display. A combination of very specialized software is used to accurately interpret the surface, animate the surface in 3D space and then to warp and mask the projected image back on to the building or structure, to make it fit perfectly on irregularly shaped surfaces. When done right, the end result is a dynamic projection installation that transcends ordinary video projection.
In December 2011, we had the great pleasure to work with our friends at Pearl Media US on two amazing Hyundai 3d projection mapping projects. This was the second one – based on an idea simply called “DJ”.
The location of this projection mapping event was on the Clock Tower located at 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, CA. The adjacent building had the incredibly talented DJ Porter Robinson, spinning tunes for the duration of the event which included one of his latest dub step tracks called Unison (the tune we had to build the animation to).
Working closely with Pearl Media every step of the way during the pre & post production stages, we began designing the look and feel of the massive 3D DJ interface that was to be projected. The idea was to have giant DJ hands interacting with the futuristic looking interface, all growing and evolving from the Hyundai Veloster, which was to be the central focus of the animation.
The high impact 3D animation & visual effects for this one took our artists a total of 5 weeks to produce and went without a single hitch.
